SEM

In the broadest sense, Search engine marketing, or SEM, is the universe of Internet Marketing in which placement is based on fees. The goal of SEM is to promote website by increasing their visibility in search engine results pages (SERPs) through the use of paid placement (pay-per-click) contextual advertising ( ads) inserted into websites based on the content of the page) and paid inclusion (ads included in certain search engines on a fee basis).

Broadly speaking, SEM may also include Surveys, White Papers, Banner Ad Placements (placement of ads on other websites), Email Marketing (purchasing or building opt-in lists in order to promote your products, inform people of a new development or sale or to encourage people to visit your site for new information or some other reason), Sweepstakes, Contests, Social Networking (facebook, linked-in, myspace, etc.) and Viral Advertising. When applied correctly all of these efforts drive traffic to a website, sometimes to a home page and other times to a landing page.

If you are managing an ecommerce site, or want to present your company’s products or services on the Internet, Search Engine Marketing is an important tool you should use to build traffic to your site.
